Kaupapa of National Significance, climate action fund

 Kaupapa of National Significance Climate Action Fund (KONS) is a collaborative funding model designed and contributed to by the Combined Community Trusts of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The purpose of this kaupapa is to boost community resilience to a changing climate and empower national-scale climate initiatives. Our 2024 inaugural fund of 600k was distributed amongst three successful recipients; Lawyers for Climate Action Aotearoa, Para Kore Marae Incorporated and The Nature Conservancy Aotearoa.

The Fund aims to support and empower community-based/led climate action through funding initiatives that;

  • Contribute to long-term reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through community-based/ led action.
  • Support ecological resilience.
  • Support the building of community climate resilience in the face of increasing extreme weather events.
  • Contribute to a tika (equitable) transition, reflecting a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and supporting Māori aspirations regarding climate action.

Applying organisations must have a charitable purpose, this usually means charitable or incorporated society status or operation as a social enterprise.

Grantseekers must be nominated by a Community Trust or other signatory of the Funders Commitment on Climate Action.
